One thing you can count on when it comes to Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra Pops conductor Jack Everly and Executive Producer Ty Johnson is that when you attend any concert they oversee, you will experience some of the best performers in the world. Singer Carpathia Jenkins who headlined in “She’s Got Soul,” an ISO Pops concert that was held Saturday at the Hilbert Circle Theatre was certainly no exception.
The Brooklyn-born vocalist with impressive Broadway and television credits was j, ned by a trio of first-rate backup singers that include Riadlari, Randy Chalmers and Sydney Brooke Harper. Accompanied by world class ISO, the tribute to famous bands and vocalists, including everyone from Adele to Gladys Knight to Whitney Houston, was one of musical excellence and pure entertainment from beginning to finish.
In possession of a powerful voice with extraordinary range, coupled with a gregarious stage personality and charismatic presence, Jenkins engaged the audience with a warmhearted banner which peppered her set list of popular and recognizable hits. Adding a touch of glamour the proceedings were at six costumes changes for herself and several for her throughout the concert.
Act 1 song selections included “Rolling in the Deep,” “Sweet Love,” “Love Train,” Soul Man,” “Happy, and “I’ll Always Love You.”
Act II highlights were “Thriller,” September,” “” I Am Strong,” “I Get You (I Feel Good) and “This Little Light of Mine.”
The final notable feature of Jenkins performance was her interactive appeal with the audience and her ability to prompt some to dance in the aisles and in place on the strength of her warmth and humour. The overall effect was pure, uninhibited joy and glee.
