MJ, the musical, is a dazzling and energetic tribute to the King of Pop, capturing the essence of Michael Jackson’s artistry, passion, and complex persona. Set primarily during the 1992 Dangerous World Tour rehearsals, the musical offers an intimate look behind the curtain, providing audiences with not only a showcase of Jackson’s iconic hits but also a glimpse into the man behind the legend. The jukebox musical, which opened on Broadway in 2022 and is on its first national tour, is presented by Broadway in Indianapolis at the Old National Centre’s Murat Theater. Continuing through January 18, it opened on Tuesday.

The show was instantly electrifying, driven by energetic performances. The choreography was nothing short of spectacular, faithfully reproducing Jackson’s signature moves while adding fresh interpretations that honor his influence on dance. Jordan Markus, who stars as Michael Jackson and played the role on Broadway, delivered an astonishing portrayal—his voice, mannerisms, and stage presence evoked the pop icon with uncanny accuracy. Markus didn’t simply impersonate; he embodied Jackson, making his spot-on performance feel both authentic and heartfelt.
The musical numbers were a true highlight, featuring an impressive selection from Jackson’s vast catalog. Crowd-pleasers like Billie Jean, Thriller, and Beat It. were performed with frenetic energy, each number receiving rapturous applause from the thoroughly engaged audience. The strong supporting, triple threat cast and ensemble bring these songs to life with vibrant costumes, synchronized dancing, and powerful vocals, creating an immersive experience.
Beyond the spectacle, MJ the Musical thoughtfully explored Jackson’s creative process and the pressures he faced as an iconic superstar. The script delves into the complexities of his relationships with his family, and that of his abusive father, in particular. Also covered is his relentless pursuit of perfection and intense scrutiny from the media. While the show does not focus extensively on the controversies that surrounded Jackson, it does not shy away from depicting his struggles with fame and the psychological toll it took on him. This nuanced approach gives the script emotional depth without detracting from the celebratory nature of the story.
Visually, the production is stunning. The set design cleverly shifts between rehearsal spaces, concert venues, and flashbacks to Jackson’s formative years with the Jackson 5. Lighting effects and projections are used to great effect, enhancing both the intimacy and the grand scope of the show. The costume design pays meticulous attention to detail, featuring Jackson’s most memorable looks—from sequined gloves to military-inspired jackets to his Fedora hat, and black loafers with white socks.
The musical, at times, resembles a greatest hits concert rather than a complete narrative. Some storylines are touched on only briefly, leaving questions about Jackson’s life and motivations. However, the sheer entertainment value and artistry on display more than compensate for these minor shortcomings.
Overall, MJ the Musical is a joyful celebration of Michael Jackson’s enduring legacy. It succeeds as both a nostalgic journey for diehard fans and an exhilarating introduction for newcomers. The show’s infectious energy, exemplary performances, and timeless music ensure that Michael Jackson’s spirit continues to shine brightly on stage.
