While experiencing “Beehive,” a Valentine to 1960s pop hits, which opened Friday at The Studio Theatre at The Center for the Performing Arts in Carmel, I was enveloped in nostalgia as I was transported back to my high school and college years.

Presented by Actors Theatre of Indiana, the sparkling jukebox revue that was created by Larry Ghallager, celebrates the powerful female voice of the tumultuous decade that saw the birth of the feminist movement and an era of female empowerment. The story is told through the lens of six women as they sing their way through many of the most iconic songs of this revolutionary decade. The joyous takes us from their first Beehive Dance to the profound social & political challenges we faced as a nation.

Superbly directed and choreographed by Carol Worcel, with outstanding music direction by Brandon Vos, the fast-paced musical featured a six-member ensemble of vocalists who are among the best I have seen on any stage. They included Michaela McGaret (Pattie), Rachel Dudt (Laura), Riley Francis (Allison), Kira Rangel (Gina) and Kayla Perry (Jasmine). Abigail Storm, who shone as Doralee in ATI’s hit 9-5 last season, was Wanda, the revue’s narrator. Together under Worcel’s and Vos’ informed and precise direction, they all faithfully captured the style and attitude of the era.  Led by Vos on keyboards, the six-piece rock band was impeccable.

All the performers delivered potent performances, with several standing out prominently, particularly during the second act. It focused on late 1960s music and changes influenced by the women’s, civil, and LGBT rights movements that contributed to profound changes in pop culture. They were Rangel, whose stunning impression of Tina Turner was spot on in Proud Mary as was Dudt in her medley of Janis Joplin hits that included Somebody To Love, Cry Baby, Try (Just a Little Bit Harder), and Me and Bobby McGee.

Reflecting a high quality I have come to expect from ATI shows, was the show’s production values that replicated the flavor of popular sixties television programs such as American Bandstand and Hallabaloo. Responsible for the pinpoint accuracy of its details were Lighting Designer Dustin Druckman, Scenic Designer Duane McDevitt, Costume Designer Guy Clark, Wig Designer Andrew Elliot.

The show, played to a nearly sold-out house that consisted primarily of Boomers who were as engaged as I was, and like me, no doubt reliving their youth. However, I encourage anyone reading this to see this show for its entertainment value for all ages. More than just a trip down memory lane, Beehive is an uplifting, feel-good theatrical joyride and escape.
